Here's what I think of IBM's Site
First of all, the layout was actually not as hard to do as I had
originally thought it would be. I managed to borow their graphics
to make some of my own with. It took me a little while, but now
I'm fairly confident at using photoshop for simple proj ects.
I chose this site because I enjoyed the layout, and I wanted to
try it out. I gave up after working on the top part for a couple
of hours, but I think I got the jist of it. Now I understand what
Dan meant today when he said that people do amazing thi ngs with
html that it simply wasn't designed to do.
Most of the pages on the IBM site were this intricate. The news
pages were much simpler, but the other pages followed the same intricated
layout, or some similar version of it. I can't even imagine why
they would want to make their lives so complicat ed. I agree that
it looks nice and that so many links are available on one single
page without ever having to scroll, but I think they've gone through
a lot of trouble to achieve that goal. Many of the links are so
not obvious, I bet people rarely acces s them. I must admit, these
people did a fantastic job with the site, I don't think I found
a single error and I found all sorts of new and weird layout on
each page.
For atomic tools to take out of this one, I learned how to create
a window by clicking on a button. Check out my miniwindow link up
above in blue.
I think that the moral of the story here is that unless you're
IBM or some other giant computer company, keeping the site a little
simpler to manage and create is a smart idea.
